Abergwrelych Cottages

Set in the Waterfall Country of the picturesque Vale of Neath

Our two lovely cottages, Yr Hen Stabl & Drws Nesaf are situated at Abergwrelych, a smallholding of eighteen acres in the upper reaches of the valley. Old buildings that might have fallen into disrepair have been rescued and lovingly restored to live another day and hopefully give pleasure to people looking for a brief respite from the hustle and bustle of today’s world.

Drws Nesaf, so called because it is ‘next door’ to us, is a cosy stone cottage originally built in 1856 as quarters for the servants of Abergwrelych House. We know the exact date from finding, during renovation, a new Young Victoria penny placed under the windowsill; a practice common to builders wishing to date their work.

Today it retains the character of the 19th Century, while at the same time providing up-to-date comforts and amenities and sleeps 4 people.

Yr Hen Stabl which sleeps 3 is the total transformation of an old, disused stable. While the thick stone walls, odd windows and hayloft door have been retained, the interior has been given new life through clever use of natural materials, such as slate and reclaimed timber.

Modern comforts are tastefully mixed with antique style; sloping ceilings and wide plank doors sit comfortably with up-to-date kitchen and bathroom fittings, double glazing and central heating.

The cottages are situated in waterfall country - Nowhere else in Wales is there such a richness and diversity of waterfalls within such a small area as can be found in the Vale of Neath.

The Neath Valley has had a chequered history. From being a ‘romantic valley’ beloved of painters such as J.M.W.Turner, it was transformed into an industrial coal-mining area. Since the demise of the mining industry, the scarred and disfigured land has been restored once more to its lush, green landscape.
