Crickhowell in Stitches is an Arts Alive participatory arts project that depicts the heart of its town centre as a lively textile map. The project is the work of over 600 local residents, adults and children, who contributed their ideas and skills to the project over 3 years from 2004 to 2007.

Artist Lisa Hellier designed and led the project, basing the overall design on her own map, and provided an infectious enthusiasm that helped many to find the confidence to get involved. All the work on the panels is that of the participants themselves who have rendered their own ideas into a fantastic and tactile display. Lisa was assisted throughout by a team of volunteers led by Jan Winstanley.

The artwork consists of 3 panels. The first two (showing each side of the High Street) were produced mainly by adults. The third panel was made by children from the Primary schools in and around Crickhowell. Each panel is bordered by squares and panels depicting the surrounding landscape and its skies are populated by photographic images of townspeople from earlier times. The panels are 'mixed media' because the participants were given the freedom to depict their contribution as they wished and include examples of collage, machine stitching, embroidery, cross stitch, knitting, patchwork, quilting and weaving.

All 3 panels have been supported by funding from Arts Council of Wales and the Sustainability Development Fund of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The Children's panel was also funded by a contribution from the members of Brecknock Decorative and Fine Arts Society. Arts Alive would like to thank all these organisations for their help and generosity.

Arts Alive is an independent arts and education charity based in Crickhowell since 1988. We aim to offer creative opportunities for all ages and abilities.
We run workshops and classes at our building on Brecon Road in Crickhowell and work with Schools, Festivals, events and Community groups at indoor and outdoor settings.
