4 - 6 JULY
UP THE VALLEY, AROUND THE MOUNTAIN!
In association with The Monmouthshire, Brecon & Abergavenny Canals Trust.
Set in the Brecon Beacons National Park, some say that the Monmouthshire canal is one of the prettiest in the country, set in beautiful countryside. During this weekend you will delve into the history of the two canals that originally formed the Monmouthshire canal, guided by experienced members of the canals trust. There will be fascinating site visits, including 14 locks currently undergoing restoration, Pontymoile basin, the original meeting place of the two canals, and a canal-side walk from Govilon to Gilwern. You will also visit the historic Goytre Wharf, built in 1810, where you can view restored limekilns, an aqueduct, marina, historic cottages and feed carp that will eat from your hand!

7 - 9 July
IRON FIST: THE CRAWSHAYS
In association with Cyfarthfa Castle
The Crawshay family of Cyfarthfa was one among the great Ironmasters of the 19th century. During this weekend course, you will be treated to an informative illustrated lecture in one of the grand rooms of the castle, from Museums Officer Scott Reid. Scott will bring to life the generations who controlled the Cyfarthfa Ironworks from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century. You will also have an opportunity to view the fine and decorative art collections and the industrial history galleries. Also included is a visit to the birthplace of Dr. Joseph Parry, the musician and composer whose best known work is Myfanwy, and a trip to Blaenavon to see one of the best preserved ironworks in Britain. Here you will learn about the process of making iron and will see fascinating housing showing how ironworkers lived. Blaenavon was awarded World Heritage Status in November 2000.

The Hill Education & Conference Centre provides a perfect base for this course as Edward Pritchard Martin, once General Manager of the Blaenavon Ironworks, once lived at The Hill, having bought it as a retirement home in 1904.
