Beautiful gardens in The Brecon Beacons that open to the public

See the dates & venues below for local gardens that are opening under the National Gardens Scheme this Summer

Every year NGS gardens across England and Wales welcome over half a million visitors. Their tradition of opening gardens of quality, character and interest is supported by our Patron, HRH The Prince of Wales.

Few people realise that through this we raise £2 million each year for nursing, caring and gardening charities. Since 1927 we have raised over £30 million (£15 million in the last 10 years). Our office is small so most of the money goes straight to the charities we support.

Most of the 3,500 gardens in the scheme are privately owned. Some open as part of a group which gets the whole community involved. But all the gardens are enjoyed by the garden owners and their visitors, funding charities to help people who are ill or under stress.

The Gliffaes Gardens have many rare and beautiful shrubs and trees. When W H West came here in 1820 a long tradition of planting was started and The History of Brecknockshire records that the "demesne was much beautified by him". Thanks to these early plantings we have magnificent specimen trees including a spectacular Acer Palmatum Septumlobum Sanguinium which is over 100 hundred years old.

Susie Suter’s Great Grandfather C H Taudevin, a Cheshire landscape gardener and nurseryman of note, was invaluable in converting a labour intensive Victorian formal garden to a more peaceful area using flowering shrubs and trees and creating less intensive maintenance. This started in 1948 in the very early days of my family being at Gliffaes.

Sam Brabner, Susie Suter’s grandfather learned much from him and became a very knowledgeable gardener himself. Her father, Nick Brabner has carried on the tradition and the gardens remain magnificent.

The garden lies in a dream position on a plateau 120 feet above the spectacular fast flowing river Usk and includes breathtaking views of the Brecon Beacons. It extends to 30 acres, some of it parkland, an ornamental pond, roughly 7 acres of lawns, spring bulbs, rhododendrons, azaleas, heathers, shrubs, ornamental trees, fine maples etc
