Digby Fairweather George Melly Sculpture Concert

@ Brecon Cathedral

A Digby Fairweather Concert 'Rembering George Melly'

The launch of the campaign to commission a sculpture to commemorate George Melly’s relationship with Brecon began at the 25th Anniversary of the Brecon Jazz Festival in 2008. This exciting campaign aims to commission a sculpture that will reflect George Melly's role in the founding of the Jazz Festival and his position as President of the Contemporary Art Society for Wales. The aim is to honour the man and his sense of fun, his mistress jazz, his interest in Surrealist art and his passion for fishing.

A special concert 'Remembering George' is being held on the 28th of November where DIGBY FAIRWEATHER will be playing with MIKE BRITTON, JOHN GIBBON & CLIVE MORTON at The Brecon Cathedral.

Digby Fairweather is widely recognised as one of the world's top 100 jazz trumpeters and he worked closely with George Melly. Digby became a fulltime jazzman in l977 and in 1995 he founded his own group 'Digby Fairweather's Half Dozen' and began national touring alongside blues legend George Melly in January 2003.

The After Show Party at Pilgrims Tearooms / Heritage Centre including 2 course buffet + glass wine and music by MIKE MARKEY AND NICK JONES

The aim is for the George Melly sculpture to be sited on the Promenade in Brecon at the confluence of the River Usk and River Hondu. It is intended that the sculpture will make a strong artistic statement, one that will raise interest in contemporary art, attract local, national and international visitors to the area and support and add value to the visual art collection at Brecknock Museum & Art Gallery, the town’s flourishing arts organisations and the Art Beat Trail.
