Saturday 3 July
Change Your World on the Old Road from Storey Arms
10:30-16:00.
Family Friendly Guided Walk. Geopark Event.
Leave your car behind and take part in Sustrans’ ‘Change your World’ week!
Meet the walk leaders at the Brecon bus interchange for a short journey together and alight high in the Central Beacons at Storey Arms. From then on it’s almost all downhill, following the line of the old Drover’s road between Merthyr Tydfil and Brecon (part of the Taff Trail). With great views of Corn Du and Pen y Fan, this lovely walk finishes at the Tai’r Bull inn at Libanus, with plenty of time to try local ales and food before catching the bus back to Brecon.

Treasures of Trecastle
13:00-16:00. Free entry.
Family Friendly Guided Walk. Geopark Event.
An area rich in archaeological heritage, this old coaching village is home to the remains of Roman roads and camps, stone circles, Iron Age hafods and mottes and baileys. Join us on this lovely circular walk around the footpaths of Trecastle and learn about the discoveries that have been unearthed by the pipeline construction, in the company of Louise Austin, from Dyfed Archaeological Trust and National Park wardens.

Exploring the History of Abergavenny
14:15-16:30. Free entry.
Family Friendly Guided Walk (repeated Thursday 5 August)
In conjunction with Abergavenny Local History Society.
Join members of the Abergavenny Local History Society on this fascinating walk from the site of the centre of the Roman fort and Norman town to the western part of Abergavenny, developed in the 19th century as a important railway centre. After visiting a delightful park with rare trees, we will look at the historic bridge over the Usk, the remains of the railway which climbed up the gorge to Brynmawr and other routes into the town for commerce and agriculture. We will see the cast iron church and two old schools as well as hearing about the development of the town from a defensive settlement to a thriving market centre.
Length, Grade & Ascent: 2½m/4km, Access for All, slight gradients only.
Meet: Castle Street Car Park opposite the Unitarian Church (SO 298141). Parking charges apply. Free car park at Byfield Lane (5 mins walk).
Please note that toilets are only available at the start and finish of the walk.

The Forge and Railway Heritage Trail
10:30-12:30. Free entry.
Family Friendly Guided Walk.
Held in conjunction with Govilon Heritage
Join local historians and National Park wardens for this circular stroll along the picturesque old railway line to view the site of an ancient forge, later known as Wildon Iron Works. Follow a country lane with beautiful mountain views down to Govilon Aqueduct and explore some of the most interesting historic buildings in the village. Discover the history of Bailey’s canal wharf built in 1805, terminus for the old tram road and a key location for the nineteenth century trade in iron, coal and lime. A fascinating insight into the history of this World Heritage Site village.

Time for Tea?
10:00 – 15:30. £7.00.
Guided Walk
A walk to the historic site of Castell Dinas at Pengenffordd, then skirting Mynydd Troed to Cockit Hill, up on to Mynydd Llangorse, and returning via Cockit Hill to Upper Trewalkin Farm for a full Welsh farmhouse afternoon tea. Booking is essential, and there is a maximum limit of 20 walkers, so make sure to book early! Contact walk leader Paul Derrick 01591 620689.

A Beacons Circuit
10:00-17:00. Free entry.
Guided Walk. Geopark Event.
(repeated 16 October)
Take in all the ‘high points’ of the Beacons on this walk over the tops of Corn Du and Pen y Fan, taking in the Tommy Jones’ Obelisk, the Upper Neuadd Reservoir and Craig Fan Ddu and learn a little about the glacial formations and local history along the way.
Length, Grade & Ascent: 10m / 16km, Strenuous, 800m.
Meet: Storey Arms car park on the A470, 8 miles south of Brecon (SN 982 203). No charge.

Nordic Walking Taster Sessions
09:45-15:30. Cost £3 per person or £5 for 2 people.

Learn the basic techniques of Nordic Walking taught by Age Cymru’s International Nordic Walking Federation Instructors.
Come and try out one of the fastest growing forms of physical activity in Europe in the grounds of the National Park Visitor Centre. Walk using a pair of lightweight, specially designed poles which provide great support while increasing the effectiveness of the exercise. Nordic walking is great all-body exercise.
There will be two hours of instruction and training in the morning, followed by lunch and a walk around the Common in the afternoon. Bring a packed lunch or have lunch in the tearooms. All equipment will be provided, but please wear your normal walking gear. The instruction and walks will be graded so will be suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels especially people 50+. A town walk, visiting sites of distinction, discovering Brecon’s fascinating past and residents of renown. No dogs please.

The Beacons Way – An 8 Day Guided Walk

This annual 8 day (98 mile) linear guided walk crosses the entire National Park from Skirrid Fawr in the east to Bethlehem in the west.

Never used a printing press before? Come and have a go! This open workshop at the Visitor Centre will be running all day. Feel free to drop in for an hour and make a print to take home. Cardiff Astronomical Society invite you to the Visitor Centre to enjoy a rare chance to see our nearest star in close-up. Solar telescopes will be set up (weather permitting!) to allow you to view the sun safely. Come and have a peek, and find out how to get involved in astronomy.
