STONE CARVING WORKSHOPS WITH MATT CAINES
Saturday and Sunday, 10th and 11th July, 2010
A one or two day course learning the craft, working in relief or in the round. All tools, materials and lunch provided.
Matt Caines
'Following a Fine Art degree at Middlesex University, my work altered from impasto landscape painting, to clay sculpture and again to stone. I worked roughing out large stones for a Sculptor before moving onto a second degree at the City and Guilds School of Art in Architectural Ornament.
I loved the history, tradition and craft of stone masonry and went to work in Carrara in Tuscany once I'd graduated.
I now run an education programme in a John Soanes church in the East End of London and have returned to the subject matter of my childhood, the fields and trees, farmers and animals. The materials I use are slow, they ground you, they are timeless. When I carve marble, I am following in the footsteps of the ancient Greeks, when I carve Portland stone I feel the tradition on the Portland quarry workers who built St.Paul's.'

The Gallery space is a warm and friendly environment showcasing some fine Welsh talent as well as selected artists from other parts of the UK including London. Goff Danter has earned himself wide acclaim in the International art collectors market with his paintings commanding high sums. His wonderful paintings capture the essence of the dramatic and atmospheric Welsh landscape.

Fun Fifties, Swinging Sixties : Being Young in Abergavenny - 26th May - 29th August 2010
Visitors to the exhibition can see vintage clothes from our costume collection, original posters advertising the Town Hall dances, Beatles memorabilia and a collection of cinema posters from the era.
The exhibition was inspired by the 50th anniversary celebration of the Museum in 2009. In conjunction with this exhibition a ‘Listening Post’ has been installed thanks to the support of Abergavenny Local History Society. On it you will find recordings by local people reminiscing about their memories of the Fifties and Sixties. This is an ongoing project and we would like to add to these recordings.
