Grass fire on Fan Hir
Mumbles Head has added a photo to the pool: Deliberately-started grass fires are the bane of South Wales at this time of year, although thankfully less common within the confines of the National Park than they are on the urban fringes of Swansea, Ammanford and Valley towns in Rhondda Cynon Taff. This fire (seen here after being left to burn itself out) ravaged a large area on the southern flanks of Fan Hir on Saturday 19 March, narrowly stopped by firefighters before it reached the young woodland in Cwm Haffes. -

Craig Savery has added a photo to the pool: First from a new batch of photos taken from a recent visit to the Brecon Beacons. A different B&W take on a much-photographed waterfall (including a few by me). Part of a superb 10 mile walk I've done 4 times now taking in 9-10 impressive waterfalls. As well as the waterfalls, the walk includes lovely woodlands, breathtaking views, a mid-way pint and an ice-cream finale. It doesn't get much better than that. -

British History Breaks 18th Mar
Lovely insightful review of Llangoed Hall and the Brecon Beacons National Park for the 50+ generation in High50 Three things we loved 1. There’s no traditional reception desk at Llangoed Hall. Instead, staff just look out for people arriving and magically appear at the door. 2. The huge bathroom and tub, Penhaligon’s toiletries, and pretty floral china designed especially for the hotel. 3. The walled garden. The chefs all put hours into it, maintaining and planting. Visit http://www.britishhistorybreaks.com/explore/llangoed-hall/ to discover the story behind this luxury hotel.

Brecon Beacons National Park 16th Mar
We have teamed up with our Ecologist to create a great new feature - Brecon Beacons Species of the Month – seasonal wildlife to look out for! MARCH - The Lesser Celandine (Ficaria verna) Harbinger of spring, treatment for a certain delicate complaint and William Wordsworth’s favourite plant…. Our native woodland wildflowers put on a fantastic display in early Spring. The Lesser Celandine is one of the earliest to flower and, despite its Welsh name of Llygad Ebrill (‘April’s Eye’), can appear as early as February. Its striking, golden yellow flowers (together with its glossy heart shaped leaves) often blanket the ground in woodlands, hedge-banks, damp fields and on the banks of streams and rivers. It’s a resilient little plant, with an ability to open and close its petals according to the weather – a feat noted by Wordsworth in one of 3 poems celebrating the little plant. “There is a Flower, the Lesser Celandine, That shrinks, like many more, from cold and rain; And, at the first moment that the sun may shine, Bright as the sun itself, ‘tis out again!” (From To the Small Celandine, William Wordsworth) And like many of our native wildflowers it has traditional herbal uses. Also known as pilewort, it was once believed to be a remedy for haemorrhoids because of the knobbly-shaped tubers attached to the roots! Gardens can be a fantastic place for nurturing wildflowers and March is a great month to begin – for lots of inspiration on what to plant and where, check out Plantlife’s The Wildflower Garden web pages http://www.plantlife.org.uk/wildflower_garden

henrhyde (gill) has added a photo to the pool: Birch trees , on Mynydd Illtyd Common , Libanus , Breconshire , South Wales . Although the birch does appear fragile, it is in fact extremely hardy. The birch promises new life and love, and is a symbol of purification and renewal, and on the consideration of new directions and goals to be experienced in our lives. Birch -- Betula -

Y Pigwn Marching Camp Reconstruction
Published on Mar 28, 2013 This reconstruction was created for the Romans in Carmarthenshire project, a Heritage Tourism Project supported by the Welsh Government through Cadw and further supported by the European Regional Development Fund. These impressive camps were constructed in just a few hours on the lofty summits of Mynydd Bach Trecastell. The Roman marching camps at Y Pigwn are thought to have been used on two separate occasions. The first camp, constructed approximately 70AD, was the base for 5000 troops and the second overlapping camp housed around 4000. Created by http://livingdatalabs.com/

Waun Ddu Fortlet Reconstruction
Published on Mar 28, 2013 This reconstruction was created for the Romans in Carmarthenshire project, a Heritage Tourism Project supported by the Welsh Government through Cadw and further supported by the European Regional Development Fund. Manned by between 20-30 Auxiliaries at any one time, the soldiers stationed here quite possibly enjoyed similar panoramic mountain views to those we see today. The Roman fortlet of Waun Ddu was a far more permanent looking structure than the marching camp. It is thought to have been built over 50 years after Y Pigwn, in the second century AD, by which time the track across the Mynydd Bach Trecastell had become a busy trading route linking Brecon to Llandovery.

Sgwd Isaf Clun Gwyn
Craig Savery has added a photo to the pool: First from a new batch of photos taken from a recent visit to the Brecon Beacons. A different B&W take on a much-photographed waterfall (including a few by me). Part of a superb 10 mile walk I've done 4 times now taking in 9-10 impressive waterfalls. As well as the waterfalls, the walk includes lovely woodlands, breathtaking views, a mid-way pint and an ice-cream finale. It doesn't get much better than that. -

BIRCH
henrhyde (gill) has added a photo to the pool: Birch trees , on Mynydd Illtyd Common , Libanus , Breconshire , South Wales . Although the birch does appear fragile, it is in fact extremely hardy. This teaches us that in weakness there is found great strength. The birch promises new life and love, and is a symbol of purification and renewal, and on the consideration of new directions and goals to be experienced in our lives. Birch -- Betula -
